Introducing Carecubes: A New Era in Infection Control

Healthcare emergencies are unpredictable, and the global impact of COVID-19 proved just how quickly hospitals’ long-term plans can be turned upside down. Preparedness is not just a backup plan, but a responsibility that should be taken seriously.

At Carecubes, we are on a mission to eliminate infectious disease transmission in healthcare settings—while restoring dignity to the patient experience and ensuring the safety of those who provide care. We’re building a company that bridges the gap between what frontline healthcare providers need and what traditional healthcare infrastructure makes possible.

Our first product—the FDA-cleared Carecube—is a mobile isolation unit designed for rapid deployment wherever care is needed. It flips the traditional model of infection control: instead of patients waiting alone behind closed doors, separated from loved ones, and receiving fewer visits from clinicians due to PPE constraints, the Carecube isolates the pathogen—allowing for exceptional, safe, and compassionate care in any setting.

Born from Urgency, Built for the Frontlines

The idea behind Carecubes emerged during the 2014 Ebola outbreak, when a group of engineers and infectious disease experts began reimagining how care could be delivered in the face of high-consequence pathogens. What if, instead of wrapping healthcare workers in layers of protective gear, there was a better way?

That bold idea sparked an R&D effort that would span nearly a decade—initially supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and later advanced with funding and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR).

Carecubes evolved through close collaboration with the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), one of the country’s leading institutions in infectious disease response. Clinicians and researchers from UNMC’s Global Center for Health Security—including Dr. James Lawler, Dr. Jana Broadhurst, Dr. David Brett-Major, and Dr. John Lowe—were instrumental in bringing the technology to life, shaping it to meet the real-world needs of healthcare providers.

Today, Carecubes is guided by a team of experienced entrepreneurs, clinicians, and public health leaders. The company is led by CEO Alex Laskey, who previously founded and took public the energy software company OPower, and co-founder Saul Griffith, a MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient and founder of Otherlab.

We’re also fortunate to be supported by prominent figures from across healthcare, government, and finance—leaders who understand the stakes and believe in the urgency of building solutions that work in practice, not just in theory.

Designed to Do More Than Isolate

The Carecube allows caregivers to treat patients face-to-face—no fogged goggles, no closed doors, no unnecessary delays.

Providers can perform emergency procedures without the time-intensive cycle of donning and doffing PPE. Family members can safely visit loved ones. Hospitals can preserve capacity and reduce transmission risk, even in surge scenarios.

For providers, that means less burnout. For patients, that means better care. For health systems, that means higher throughput, lower costs, and fewer trade-offs.

Carecubes is more than a product.

It’s a commitment to the people who show up every day to keep us safe—and to the communities they serve. As we grow, we’re dedicated to sharing insights, tools, and real-world learning with the health systems and providers on the front lines.
